The Umbwe Route is one of the most direct and physically demanding trails to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. This 5-day trek is ideal for confident hikers seeking a fast ascent through stunning and varied terrain, away from the crowds.
Starting at Umbwe Gate on the mountain’s southeastern flank, the trail ascends steeply through lush rainforest before transitioning to scenic moorlands and alpine desert. Unlike the Marangu Route, the Umbwe Route is a full camping route, with overnight stays in tents at designated camps like Barranco, Karanga, and Barafu.
On summit night, climbers depart from Barafu Camp around midnight to reach Stella Point for sunrise, continuing to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. The rapid gain in altitude makes acclimatization more challenging, so this route is recommended for experienced and physically fit trekkers.
While demanding, the Umbwe Route rewards climbers with dramatic scenery, low foot traffic, and a true sense of adventure. Our experienced team at Origin Ventures and Safaris ensures a safe, supported journey with trained guides, porters, and cooks by your side.
Highlights:
• Most direct route to Kilimanjaro's summit
• Spectacular views and less crowded trail
• Challenging ascent for confident hikers
• Full camping experience with support team
• Summit via Stella Point and Uhuru Peak
