Rongai Route is the only route that approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the north, close to the Kenyan border. It offers a unique trekking experience, distinct from the southern and western routes. Because it is less trafficked, Rongai is ideal for those seeking solitude and a quieter ascent.
The route passes through a variety of landscapes, starting from arid wilderness and ascending through lush forests, moorlands, and alpine desert before reaching the icy summit of Uhuru Peak. The dry climate on the northern side makes this route a great option during the rainy season, as it receives significantly less rainfall.
Rongai is considered a moderately difficult route and is well-suited for climbers with some trekking experience or those who prefer a more gradual ascent. It usually takes 6 to 7 days to complete, which allows for better acclimatization and a higher success rate.
Trekkers on the Rongai Route often enjoy sightings of wildlife such as colobus monkeys, and the trail offers stunning views across the Kenyan plains. It is also one of the few routes that allows trekkers to truly experience the remote, untouched wilderness of Kilimanjaro’s northern slopes.
The final summit push converges with the Marangu Route at Kibo Hut, allowing climbers to experience the scenic Gilman’s Point on their way to Uhuru Peak. Descent is typically via the Marangu Route, offering a different perspective on the way down.
When you are a seasoned adventurer or a first-time climber seeking a quieter, scenic, and more gradual approach, the Rongai Route offers an unforgettable journey to the top of Africa.
