Itinerary Overview – 7 Days Rongai Route

Day 1: Moshi/Arusha – Rongai Gate – Simba Camp (2,650m)
Drive to the Rongai Gate for registration and begin the trek through lush forests to Simba Camp. Moderate hike with a chance to spot wildlife.

Day 2: Simba Camp – Second Cave Camp (3,450m)
A steady climb with great views of the eastern ice fields and Kibo. Overnight at Second Cave Camp.

Day 3: Second Cave – Kikelewa Camp (3,600m)
Trek continues through moorland landscapes. Mawenzi Peak becomes more prominent as we ascend.

Day 4: Kikelewa – Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m)
A short but steep climb to a spectacular campsite beneath Mawenzi. Afternoon acclimatization hike included.

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn – Kibo Hut (4,700m)
Cross the lunar desert of the Saddle to reach Kibo Hut. Early dinner and rest before the summit push.

Day 6: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Horombo Hut (3,700m)
Begin summit attempt at midnight. Reach Uhuru Peak at sunrise, the highest point in Africa. Descend to Horombo for overnight.

Day 7: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate – Return to Moshi/Arusha
Final descent through the rainforest to Marangu Gate. Receive your summit certificate and transfer back to hotel for a well-earned rest.

7 Days Rongai Route – Kilimanjaro Trekking Itinerary

Welcome to Origin Ventures and Safaris! Experience the thrill of conquering Africa’s highest peak via the scenic and less-traveled Rongai Route. This 7-day itinerary offers a beautiful, remote trail starting from the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro near the Kenyan border.

Best Time to Trek: January to mid-March and June to October are considered the best months due to dry weather and clear summit conditions.

Day 1: Moshi/Arusha – Rongai Gate – Simba Camp (2,650m)

Depart from your hotel in Moshi/Arusha after breakfast. Drive to the Rongai Gate near the Kenya border for registration. Begin the trek through rainforest and gentle terrain to Simba Camp. Overnight in tents.

Day 2: Simba Camp – Second Cave Camp (3,450m)

Today’s hike takes you through moorland with views of Kibo and the eastern glaciers. A steady ascent with time to acclimatize. Overnight at Second Cave Camp.

Day 3: Second Cave – Kikelewa Camp (3,600m)

Continue trekking across open heathland and ridges to Kikelewa Camp. Enjoy a more rugged and scenic terrain. Mawenzi Peak becomes increasingly dramatic in view.

Day 4: Kikelewa Camp – Mawenzi Tarn (4,330m)

A short but steep climb brings you to the Mawenzi Tarn beneath Mawenzi Peak. One of the most beautiful campsites on Kilimanjaro. Optional acclimatization hike in the afternoon.

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn – Kibo Hut (4,700m)

Cross the lunar-like Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Arrive at Kibo Hut and rest early in preparation for the midnight summit attempt.

Day 6: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Horombo Hut (3,700m)

Begin your summit push at midnight. Trek through the dark and cold up to Gillman’s Point, and then to the glorious Uhuru Peak – the roof of Africa. After photos and celebration, descend carefully to Horombo Hut for overnight rest.

Day 7: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate – Moshi/Arusha

Final descent through lush rainforest to Marangu Gate. Receive your summit certificate. Transfer back to your hotel in Moshi/Arusha for a warm shower and well-earned celebration.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

No prior high-altitude hiking experience is necessary, but good physical fitness and mental determination are essential. The Rongai Route is considered one of the easier routes due to its gradual ascent.

Accommodation is in high-quality tents, shared between 2 people. Our team also provides sleeping mats and full camp setup each day.

Temperatures can drop to as low as -10°C to -20°C (14°F to -4°F) at the summit during the night. Layered clothing, thermal gear, and windproof jackets are essential.

Public toilets are available at most campsites, though basic. We also offer private portable toilets for added comfort (optional upgrade).

Rongai Route has a high success rate (around 85-90%) due to its gradual ascent and good acclimatization profile over 7 days.
