Seven (7) Days Marangu Route Trekking - Kilimanjaro

Overview of the 7 Days Marangu Route

The 7 Days Marangu Route is the only Kilimanjaro route that offers hut accommodation instead of tents, making it popular among trekkers seeking more comfort. Often referred to as the “Coca-Cola Route”, it is well-established and features a consistent trail used for both ascent and descent.

Starting at Marangu Gate on the southeast side of Kilimanjaro, the route ascends through rich rainforest to Mandara Hut, followed by the moorland region around Horombo Hut. From there, trekkers cross the open saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo before attempting the summit via Gilman’s Point and onward to Uhuru Peak (5,895m).

The 7-day itinerary includes a critical acclimatization day at Horombo Hut on Day 3, which significantly improves your chances of reaching the summit. However, this route is still considered physically demanding — especially the long summit night from Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and back.

While Marangu is known for its comfort (bunk beds, dining huts, and solar-powered lighting), it is also one of the more popular and sometimes crowded routes. The use of the same trail up and down can limit scenic variation, but it remains a solid choice for those prioritizing shelter over wilderness camping.

Trekking with Origin Ventures and Safaris means you'll be supported by experienced Kilimanjaro professionals — guides, porters, and cooks — committed to your safety, acclimatization, and success on Africa’s highest peak.

7 Days Marangu Route – Kilimanjaro Trekking Itinerary

Welcome to Origin Ventures and Safaris! Experience the iconic Marangu Route—the only route on Mount Kilimanjaro that offers hut accommodation throughout the journey. This 7-day trek includes an extra acclimatization day to increase summit success rates while enjoying a scenic journey from rainforest to summit.

Best Time to Trek: January–March and June–October. These months offer the best weather conditions and clear summit views. The Marangu Route is open year-round, making it ideal for first-time trekkers.

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi/Arusha (Optional)

Arrive in Moshi or Arusha and transfer to your hotel for a pre-climb briefing and gear check with your guides. This day can be used to rest, explore the town, and prepare for the trek ahead.

Day 2: Marangu Gate (1,870m) – Mandara Hut (2,720m)

After breakfast, drive to Marangu Gate for registration and a short briefing. Begin your trek through lush rainforest filled with giant ferns, fig trees, and playful colobus monkeys.

Arrive at Mandara Hut after a 4–5 hour trek. Take an optional short walk to Maundi Crater for panoramic views over the plains and Mount Meru.

Day 3: Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Leave the rainforest and enter the heath and moorland zone. The trail is open and scenic with giant groundsels and heather.

After a 5–6 hour trek, arrive at Horombo Hut with views of both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Enjoy a warm meal and rest in shared dormitory-style huts.

Day 4: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

Spend a full day at Horombo Hut to acclimatize. Optional hike up to Mawenzi Ridge (4,300m) or Zebra Rocks to help your body adjust to the altitude.

This extra day significantly improves summit success and reduces altitude sickness. Return to Horombo for a second night.

Day 5: Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut (4,700m)

Trek across the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, a high-altitude desert with minimal vegetation but dramatic landscapes.

Reach Kibo Hut in the afternoon. Rest early, as the summit attempt begins just after midnight.

Day 6: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Begin your summit push around midnight, climbing slowly through scree and switchbacks. Reach Gillman’s Point (5,685m) around sunrise, then continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak—the highest point in Africa!

After photos and celebration at the summit, descend carefully back to Kibo Hut for rest, then continue downward to Horombo Hut for your overnight stay.

Day 7: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate – Return to Moshi/Arusha

After breakfast, descend through moorland and lush rainforest to reach Marangu Gate. Sign out and receive your summit certificate—a proud moment!

Meet your driver and transfer back to Moshi or Arusha for a hot shower, celebration, and rest.
