Discover the raw and untouched wilderness of southern and western Tanzania in this 7-day journey through Nyerere National Park, Udzungwa Mountains, Mikumi National Park, and Mahale Mountains National Park. Far from the crowds of the Northern Circuit, this route takes you deep into Tanzania’s hidden gems—where nature whispers and adventure comes alive.
Begin in Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve), one of Africa’s largest protected areas. Cruise the Rufiji River past hippos and crocodiles, and experience walking safaris in an ecosystem that’s both wild and soul-stirring.
Continue to the lush and mystical Udzungwa Mountains, known as the "African Galapagos" for their unique biodiversity. Hike into ancient rainforests, discover hidden waterfalls like Sanje Falls, and encounter rare endemic species found nowhere else on Earth.
Journey next into Mikumi National Park, often compared to the Serengeti in beauty and wildlife density. Here, golden savannas stretch beneath the Uluguru Mountains, home to lions, giraffes, elephants, and vibrant birdlife. Sunset game drives offer a perfect blend of peace and raw beauty.
The grand finale awaits at Mahale Mountains National Park, on the sparkling shores of Lake Tanganyika. Trek through emerald forests in search of wild chimpanzees—a life-changing experience. Spend your evenings on the beach, where the silence is broken only by the call of forest birds and lapping waves.
This is not just a safari—it’s a soulful exploration of Tanzania’s quieter, wilder side. Origin Ventures and Safaris invites you to step off the beaten path and into a world where wilderness, wonder, and intimate connection with nature define every day.
Arrive at Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) where our friendly team from Origin Ventures will greet you. You’ll be transferred to your comfortable hotel in Dar es Salaam for overnight rest. Enjoy a relaxing evening and prepare for the wild beauty that awaits. Overnight in Dar es Salaam.
Early morning, take a scenic flight or drive to Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve), one of the largest protected wildernesses in Africa. After check-in and lunch at your riverside camp, embark on a boat safari along the Rufiji River. Spot crocodiles, hippos, and water birds as the sun sets over the riverbanks. Overnight in a tented camp within Nyerere.
Spend the day immersed in the wilds of Nyerere. A morning walking safari with an armed ranger reveals the intricate details of the bush – tracks, medicinal plants, and animal behavior. In the afternoon, enjoy a thrilling game drive across diverse landscapes: wetlands, woodlands, and open plains. Expect encounters with lions, elephants, wild dogs, and more. Overnight in Nyerere.
After breakfast, head west towards the Udzungwa Mountains National Park. This is one of Tanzania’s most unique and least visited gems. Upon arrival, relax at your eco-lodge nestled in the forested foothills. The afternoon is at leisure or spent exploring the local culture. Overnight near the Udzungwa Mountains.
After an early breakfast, begin your guided trek through lush rainforest trails. The highlight is the breathtaking Sanje Waterfall, tumbling over 170 meters into the forest below. Along the way, spot rare primates such as the Sanje Mangabey and unique birds. Return in the afternoon and transfer to nearby Mikumi National Park. Overnight in a lodge on the park’s edge.
Morning game drive through the golden savannas of Mikumi, often called the “mini-Serengeti” due to its open plains and abundance of wildlife. After lunch, take a flight to Mahale Mountains National Park, located on the remote shores of Lake Tanganyika. Arrive by boat transfer, and enjoy a peaceful evening by the lake. Overnight in a lakeside lodge or camp in Mahale.
Rise early for a chimpanzee trekking adventure in the dense forest slopes of Mahale. These wild chimpanzees are habituated and offer one of the best tracking experiences in Africa. Watch them forage, groom, and play in their natural home. After lunch and rest, enjoy a swim or kayak in Lake Tanganyika before your flight back. End of safari.
