6 Days Udzungwa – Mikumi – Mahale Safari

Overview of This Safari Adventure

Explore the wild and untouched treasures of Southern and Western Tanzania in this immersive 6-day safari that takes you from lush mountain forests to open savannah and finally to the shores of Lake Tanganyika. Visit the pristine Udzungwa Mountains, wildlife-rich Mikumi National Park, and the remote, magical chimpanzee territory of Mahale Mountains National Park.

Begin your journey in the enchanting Udzungwa Mountains — known as the "Galápagos of Africa" due to its unique biodiversity. Trek through misty rainforests, discover rare primates, and marvel at waterfalls like Sanje Falls. This area is perfect for nature lovers and hikers looking for a peaceful escape.

Next, head to Mikumi National Park, often called the "little Serengeti" because of its open plains and abundant wildlife. Encounter elephants, zebras, giraffes, and lions against a backdrop of the Uluguru Mountains. Game drives here offer excellent opportunities for photography and close wildlife encounters.

Your final destination is Mahale Mountains National Park, accessible only by boat or air. It’s one of the best places in Africa to see wild chimpanzees. Track chimps on foot through dense tropical forest, enjoy boat rides on Lake Tanganyika, and soak in one of the most remote and magical safari experiences Tanzania has to offer.

This adventure is designed for explorers seeking something beyond the usual routes — a perfect mix of hiking, classic safari, and primate tracking. With expert guidance, smooth logistics, and handpicked accommodations, Origin Ventures and Safaris invites you to experience the true wilderness of Tanzania.

Hiking in Udzungwa Mountains

This unique itinerary spans three ecosystems — rainforest, savannah, and tropical lake shore. Here’s when to go:

  • June to October: Best for chimpanzee trekking in Mahale and dry weather in Mikumi/Udzungwa. Ideal time for hiking and wildlife.
  • December to February: Clear forest trails, active wildlife, and excellent lake visibility. Great for birding in Udzungwa.
  • March to May: Lush scenery and fewer visitors. Some areas in Mahale may be harder to access due to rains.

We plan around seasonal patterns to ensure you get the best combination of activity, scenery, and access.
